Condemned 2 Bloodshot Review Saturday, April 5th, 2008

I had a rough time with its predecessor, but it had enough good in it for me to finish the game.  I had seen some cool trailers for Bloodshot (Condemned 2) so I was pretty excited to pick it up last week and check it out, and I am glad I did, they took a mediocre game and took up a few notches in several areas.

Onto the to the world of Ethan Thomas; an angry drunk and begrudging serial killer hunter! In take 2, the graphics are a bit better overall and they fixed one of my major complaints with the prior version: the constant darkness!  You could certainly adjust the brightness to suit your preference, but even when doing so in Condemned, it was a lot of work to make out objects on screen and required squinting and changing your focus from the task at hand.  Even though I still had to turn up the brightness, the darker areas seem to have a higher contrast with more detail, so playing those drab scenes in the sewers, basements, bathrooms, and alleys is way easier on the eyes.   Moreover, Bloodshot actually has some levels that are lighter and more visually aesthetic then the infested rot that shadows most scenes, like the FBI labs which is a nice change, even though it quickly fills with tar like sludge and delusional blur.    It’s still a very dirty game and I feel slightly sullied after playing.  The unsanitary bathrooms painted with blood and feces and rotten infested carcasses and garbage strewn everywhere, make me want to my wash hands when I let go of the controller.   Visual unsanitary, but I suppose it adds to the tone of the story.

My favorite Super creepy baddie!

The real upgrade in the game is the melee fighting techniques with combo and parry moves that add a great of texture to your combat.  Though some of these moves are prompted trigger pulls, it’s quite an improvement.

The investigative techniques are still mostly the same, (camera, spectrometer, UV Detector, etc.), but now you get upgrades and new equipment as the game progresses, including armor.  There are more puzzle investigations that add texture to game play and to get a perfect score you have to answer all questions correct on the first try.  Which means you have to put a little more thought into your investigations this go round.

The achievement scheme is a lot different and those investigations are a big part of getting your points.  You don’t just collect 6 birds per level and collect your cool 25 points.  There are transmitter collectable’s, player responses, and emitters all of which are required to be a top notch investigator.  There are 25 single player achievements and 13 multiplayer achievements, but you don’t get achievements for finishing anyone mission on any particular level.  For example, you have to get all perfects on all levels to get that achievement or your have to make gold investigator on each level to the gold achievement, etc.

Image 111It’s a scary and entertaining game, better then the first, even though its caked with nastiness and the baddies are uber gross!  The boss in the doll factory (left) is toe-up!  You have to love a crazy clown chick with a psychedelic laugh that makes your skin crawl but somehow looks sexy in her dirty corset and striped stockings.   Even though she wants to kill you with the rotary saw blade lollipop she’s wielding you might feel sad to have to stick her head through the grinder…ewwww.

Highlights

  • A new melee combat system which includes offensive / defensive combo moves, grabs and holds, and death moves interacting with the environment, i.e., throwing a body through a TV.
  • New environments like outside areas, labs and warehouses.
  • New gear and forensics tools and a redesigned process for the investigation of the crime scenes that is all upgradable based on new scoring system.
  • Many new items in the environment can be used as melee or throwing weapons like golf clubs, bricks, and exploding dolls.
  • More gun play with weapons like the sub-gun and crossbow, but keeps the cool stun gun from V1.
  • More accurate game play for difficulty levels, i.e., normal is actually medium and hard is difficult!
  • All-new multiplayer modes like fight club “Circle of Death” add to the game after your story mode is complete and some texture to the new fighting system.
  • Much more cohesive storyline keeping the same characters yet introducing new characters, new baddies, and new bosses.
  • A killer creepy soundtrack enhancing the overall "fear factor"!

I wouldn’t recommend you play this game with the kiddos around, it almost gives me nightmares, certainly the heebie-jeebies.

Boy Genius asked me if I was singing a different tune in the console wars since my new addiction, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, released for the PS3.   It’s so much fun and visually awesome - by far the best looking game I’ve played.   Give me NGS for all the consoles though and I think I would still play on it on the 360.  Though I am admittedly curious to see a comparison of game that good, i.e., if it’s the harnessing of the PS3’s potential or if the 360 can pull off a game that spectacular looking as well.  Notorious hardware failures aside - I’m still whistling dixie about the Xbox.  Live simply has no competitor and the controller is entirely comfortable contrary to PS3’s under weighted Sixaxis thats far too small to hold comfortably.

PS3 Lowers price - Still the top wallet muncher!

The PS3 drops a benjamin but still holds the highest tag of the trio.  The 80GB console bundled with Motorstorm (One of the better I’ve played on the PS3) is supposed to be available here in August for the low low price of just $599.  You can only buy 3 Wii’s for that.

Microsoft does too love the little people!

Even though all you little ankle biters are out there shouting conspiracy (again) about how they knew the boxes were faulty and should have delayed RTM, I am sending a Gametart kiss & kudos to Redmond for stepping up. That’s right folks, MS has extended its warranty on the 360 to 3 years post purchase due to the infamous Red Ring of Death (three flashing lights indicating a hardware failure).  As a side note: whoever you are that named the blue screen of death and now the red ring of death please get outside for some sunshine and leave the comic book macabre mentality in the dark place.

Chick WOW Player gets popped for relationship with 17 year old!

No kiddng.  The 31 year old Austrailian woman, Tamara Boone (left) met her beloved boy somewhere in the wide world of warcraft.  She flew to the states, North Carolina where the 17 year old minor lived with his parents, to pick up her boy toy and return to the outback.  The folks didnt like the idea of their son MIA and called the cops who arrested Tamara at the train station with a US Postal Worker (huh?).  She gets charged with child abduction and thrown behind bars.  Sigh.  Young love.

What box do you fit in?

Tor Thorsen for Gamespot.com reports on industry standard research that sections us out into six sub categories of gamers and estimates who is wielding the spending sword: Avid PC Gamers, Secondary Gamers, Avid Console Gamers, Casual Kid Gamers, Heavy Gamers, Mass Market Gamers.

“Although they make up just 2 percent of the gaming public, “Heavy Gamers” own an average of 2.8 consoles and 1.9 portables. They play a whopping 39.3 hours a week, mainly on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, and buy a budget-busting average of 13.1 games every quarter–or roughly 4.5 games each month.”

According to this, BG and I are heavy gamers because we buy 4 or 5 titles a month and have all the systems, though its been a long time since I plugged in for 39 plus hours in a week.  Maybe during the teenage years of my Horde warriors life, but that’s even pushing it.  Interesting article though.  After looking at these numbers, I feel pretty good about my game to life balance, but a little concerned on the game to checkbook balance …Eeeek!

360 Game Review - X-Men III Thursday, March 29th, 2007

I am an “experience” (as opposed to experienced) gamer.  Meaning, I have to be totally engaged with it and I won’t continue with a game just for the sake of beating it. There are few games that have stamina to keep my attention all the way to games end.  If the story dies, if new game play techniques aren’t introduced, and if the levels aren’t challenging but achievable, forget it, I’m already rubbing up on the glass of the 360 case at Hastings.

X-men - The Official Game follows the story line of The Last Stand yet stays with “comic” style, which may float the boat for some Xmen fanatics, but is disappointing for me.  I want the cinematics and I want to feel the graphic awe.  You don’t get either here.  The cut scenes are non animated comic strip sliders with voice over scripts that really cheapen the overall feel.  The game play graphics are not as good as comparables for next gen systems and the visual let down leaves the entire worth on game play.

You are limited to 3 characters; Wolverine, Iceman, and Nightcrawler which is downer to some extent, some of the other characters could have been a blast to play.    Iceman is the flyer and can surf the sky on his icy pathways shooting freeze bombs at ships or putting out fires in the city.  Wolverine is the bad ass brawler and Nightcrawler is the teleporter which makes him the slickest character in game play and a lot of fun to move around.   There is very little mental challenge which feels a little like grinding to level in world of warcraft, so it’s a good thing the levels are fairly short.

The deal with achievements is sketchy, I’ve done 7 or 8 levels and have not gotten any 360 achievement points.  It seems you earn game points and when you reach 950 game points you start getting achievements.  I will probably not find out, but I left you a list down below of what should be available.

All in all, the game just doesn’t meet the expectation levels of 360 gamers.  If you want some mindless entertainment, try Nightcrawlers parallel, its pretty fly use the teleportation in your fight sequences, that’s about the coolest part of the game.

xbox 360 LEGO Star Wars II - Review Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Some of my favorite past-times are suffering from neglect and my toes are overdue for their monthly hooker red paint job, and that is a travesty. Worse yet, my blatant disregard for the ten little piggies comes with no honorable justification, no noble ambition or valiant effort towards some greater good, like shoe shopping. Instead, I have willingly spent the last 24 hours of foot abandon deeply immersed in Lego Star Wars II.

I got a tip about this game on dawngrrl.com (Thanks Adam!) after I finished tomb raider I wanted an another action type, figure it out, kind of adventure. It’s absolutely brilliant. A fast paced, well written and remarkably fun trip of pure digital enjoyment.

It’s a little buggy, on some of the flying levels you can get yourself into a funky recursion that loops your steering endlessly. However, I have only seen it with 2 players, and its easy to workaround. Have one player drop out and the come back in and all will be right with the galaxy. It’s not too difficult to get yourself stuck behind a tree or in a rut somewhere, but again, nothing you cant fix and nothing too serious.

This game has the best 2 player functionality I have seen. P-1 grabs a controller and goes to town, and a P-2 can hop in and out at anytime with no negative effect on the player, no restarting the levels, etc.

The game is right on with the movies and parallels the scenes and the characters very well. The humor is crazy funny, I laugh through all the cinematics. There is no dialog at all, just well placed sound effects and some Charlie brown teacher type mumbling.

This makes for some great creative opportunities, i.e., when its time for Darth to spit out the oh-so-famous line “Luke, I am your Father?”, Darth holds up a polaroid of Luke’s pregnant mother instead. Seriously…I about Pee’d my gamer grrl panties!

Don’t let the slapstick comedy and toy based theme fool you though, the game is technically challenging, and full of some hardcore action. From the fighting to the flying to using the Jedi Force this is packed with variety and mental demand!

All in all - thumbs up gamer fools! Give it ago says Dawngrrl, and let me know what you think!

May the force be with you!

Yesterday I beat Tomb Raider and slapped that ho Amanda down! I had such a good time with this game, I beat it on my DS, now el 360, and I am considering doing it on a time trial or more difficult level. I found myself slightly disappointed it was all over and I am itching for another adventure type game. Sadly, I have not found one yet for the 360, so keep you eyes open for me, let me know what you find and we’ll hop on Live and do some ass kicken’!
